A corner of Morven built for birds

Since 2022 we've been working on one thing at Gidgees: making this corner of Morven a good place to be a bird. We extended the dam, built nesting waterholes and planted more than 1,000 trees and shrubs.

Today there are bird walks, water points and hides around the campground, melon holes for nesting, and bird-themed sculptures tucked into the grounds. Two of the walks are vehicle-friendly, so everyone can get out among the birds.

Every guest gets a species list to tick off, and there's a large collection of bird books at the campground to help with identification.

We live here. We care. Come and see who's turned up.

When to look

First light

Early morning, when the dawn chorus starts.

Golden hour

Late afternoon, with sunset over the dam.

Birds are most active in the cooler months, March to October.

Look gently

Birding manners

  • No call playback. Let the birds sing for themselves.
  • No drones. Keep the sky quiet for the birds.
  • Stay on the marked tracks. It protects ground nesters and the plantings.
  • Keep away from nests and roosts. Watch from a distance and move on if a bird seems unsettled.

Find your birds at Gidgees

Over 130 birds have been recorded on our property, and you could be the next to spot one. Open the checklist to tick off every bird you find, then tell us about anything new. It works on your phone, so you can keep it in your pocket on the walks.
